In today’s digital world, cybersecurity is not just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental necessity for businesses of all sizes. With cyber threats becoming more sophisticated, it’s crucial to have a robust security framework in place. This is where the “Essential 8” comes in.

Developed by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), the Essential 8 is a set of baseline mitigation strategies designed to protect Australian businesses from the most common cyberattacks. While not legally mandatory for all, it is highly recommended and considered a benchmark for cybersecurity best practice in Australia. For some non-corporate Commonwealth entities, it is a mandatory requirement.

Why is the Essential 8 so Important?

Implementing the Essential 8 provides a strong foundation for your organisation’s security posture. By focusing on these eight key areas, you can significantly reduce your risk of data breaches, financial loss, and reputational damage. It’s a proactive approach to security that helps to make your systems more resilient against opportunistic cybercriminals.

The 8 Mitigation Strategies

The Essential 8 is not a single solution, but a series of controls that work together to protect your systems. Let’s break down the eight strategies:

1. Application Control: This strategy is about preventing the execution of unauthorised or malicious programs. By creating a list of approved applications, you can stop most malware in its tracks.

2. Patch Applications: Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software. This involves regularly updating your applications to the latest versions to ensure they are patched against known security flaws.

3. Configure Microsoft Office Macro Settings: Malicious macros in Microsoft Office files are a common way for attackers to deliver malware. This strategy involves configuring Office to block or control macros from the internet.

4. User Application Hardening: This involves configuring web browsers and other user applications to disable or control high-risk features, such as Flash, ads, and Java, which can be exploited by attackers.

5. Restrict Administrative Privileges: Limiting the number of users with administrative rights reduces the potential for misuse or compromise of powerful accounts. It’s about giving users only the access they need to do their jobs.

6. Patch Operating Systems: Just like applications, operating systems need to be kept up to date. This means applying the latest security patches to your Windows, macOS, or Linux systems to protect against known vulnerabilities.

7. Multifactor Authentication (MFA): MFA adds an extra layer of security to your logins. By requiring a second form of verification (like a code from your phone) in addition to a password, you can make it much harder for unauthorised users to access your systems.

8. Regular Backups: In the event of a ransomware attack or other data loss incident, having regular and recent backups of your critical data is essential for a swift recovery.

Maturity Levels: A Staged Approach to Security

The ACSC has defined a maturity model for the Essential 8, with levels from Zero to Three. This allows businesses to implement the strategies in a phased approach, gradually improving their security posture over time.
